What is Documenso?
Documenso connects preparation, recipient coordination, and signing status in one workflow. Teams can place fields, assign recipient roles, reuse templates, and monitor progress in the application, or integrate signing through APIs and embeds. Electronic signatures still need an appropriate process for the document and jurisdiction.
Documenso is an open-source document-signing tool that teams can self-host. Its API can create, manage, and send documents for signing, track their status, and retrieve completed PDFs.
Core capabilities
- Prepare documents with signer, approver, and field assignments
- Reuse templates and manage signing activity across teams
- Integrate signatures through REST APIs, webhooks, and embeds
Documents, roles, and completion evidence
Upload a PDF, add recipients who sign, approve, or view it, and place signature, text, date, or other fields. Progress can then be monitored after sending. Roles and document preparation help coordinate the process, but they should not be read as a universal guarantee of legal enforceability.

Reusable workflows for teams and products
Templates reduce setup for repeated agreements, and teams provide a shared boundary for documents and members. APIs, webhooks, and embedding connect signing to other applications. The current developer guide is moving document and template endpoints toward envelopes, so new integrations should follow the current OpenAPI reference and migration guidance.

Use cases
- 01
Collect signatures on routine agreements
Upload a document, add recipients and fields, send the request, and retain a completion record for contracts, consent forms, approvals, and other recurring paperwork.
- 02
Standardize repeatable document workflows
Create templates with fixed roles and fields so sales, people, operations, or legal teams can start consistent signing processes without rebuilding each document.
- 03
Add signing to an existing product
Use the REST API, webhooks, and embedding options to create documents, track events, and present signing inside a customer-facing or internal application.
