What is Immich?

Immich turns a server into a photo and video workspace with mobile and web access. Selected phone albums can upload automatically, while timelines, maps, faces, albums, and contextual search help recover older media. Administrators retain responsibility for storage and must keep independent backups of valuable originals.

Immich is a self-hosted photo and video management solution with mobile and web apps. It supports automatic mobile backup, shared albums, and searches across metadata, objects, and faces.

Core capabilities

  • Back up selected phone albums with checksum-based deduplication
  • Browse timelines, maps, albums, recognized faces, tags, and memories
  • Search by metadata, recognized people, OCR text, location, or visual meaning

Backup with library control

The mobile app uploads selected albums and uses checksums to avoid sending files already on the server. Background upload depends on the mobile operating system's scheduling and permissions. Uploading to Immich is one part of a backup strategy, not a replacement for independent copies of the library.

Several ways to find a memory

A chronological timeline is only one view of the collection. Immich groups faces, plots geocoded assets on a map, supports albums, tags, favorites, stacks, and memories, and combines conventional metadata filters with OCR and vector-backed contextual search for less literal queries.

Sharing without moving the archive

Separate user accounts can share albums and entire libraries while public links expose only selected assets to outside recipients. That makes collaboration possible without duplicating the primary collection into another hosted service, while the administrator retains responsibility for storage, backups, updates, and availability.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

    Maintain a household photo archive

Give each household member an account, automatically upload selected phone albums, and keep the original library on infrastructure the household administers while retaining mobile and browser access.

  2. 02

    Find media without perfect filenames

Use recognized faces, map locations, dates, album membership, metadata filters, OCR text, and contextual image search to retrieve items even when their file names and folders carry little meaning.

  3. 03

    Share a controlled collection

Collaborate through shared albums or partner sharing, or create a public link with options such as expiration and password protection for recipients who do not have an account on the server.
