What is Mealie?

Mealie gives a household a shared place to turn scattered recipe pages and family instructions into a searchable collection. Recipes can feed a calendar-like meal plan and reusable shopping lists, while groups and households separate private spaces from shared recipe pools. An API and event integrations connect the cooking workflow to other home systems.

Mealie is a self-hosted recipe manager, meal planner, and shopping-list app. It can import recipe details from a URL, and includes a REST API for third-party applications.

Core capabilities

  • Import and edit recipes from URLs, images, HTML, JSON, and manual entry
  • Organize cookbooks, tags, categories, tools, groups, and households
  • Plan meals and turn recipe ingredients into managed shopping lists

From scattered pages to structured recipes

A URL importer can extract supported recipe pages, while image, HTML, JSON, and manual paths cover material that is not already in a compatible web format. Once stored, ingredients, instructions, nutrition, notes, tags, categories, tools, and cookbooks make the collection easier to browse and reuse.

Planning connects recipes to shopping

The meal planner assigns recipes or free-form entries to dates and meal types, with rules available for recurring plans. Ingredients can flow from recipes into shopping lists, where quantities, labels, stores, and completion state turn a collection of ideas into a practical household workflow.

Shared and isolated spaces

Groups act as fully separate Mealie spaces, while households inside a group can share a recipe pool but retain distinct meal plans, shopping lists, integrations, users, and settings. REST and GraphQL APIs, webhooks, and notifications provide extension points beyond the browser interface.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

  2. 02

    Plan meals for a household

Place breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and side dishes on a shared plan, use rules for recurring choices, and let household members coordinate upcoming meals without changing another household's private schedule.
