What is n8n?
n8n combines a visual workflow graph with code and direct API access for the places where prebuilt nodes are not enough. Technical teams can connect more than 500 integrations, add AI agents and retrieval, inspect each execution, require human approval, and deploy the same automation on n8n Cloud or infrastructure they control.
n8n is a fair-code platform for building and deploying automated workflows and AI agents. It combines a visual canvas with custom JavaScript or Python, and can run self-hosted or in the cloud.
Core capabilities
- Connect more than 500 integrations and arbitrary APIs
- Mix visual nodes with JavaScript or Python logic
- Trace, test, govern, and self-host AI agents and workflows
Visual when possible, code when needed
The canvas keeps every trigger, decision, integration, and data transformation visible, but it does not limit a workflow to configured nodes. JavaScript, Python, and custom API calls can handle specialized logic while still participating in the same inspected execution history.

AI with operational controls
AI steps can use retrieval, multiple models, MCP, and business integrations without becoming opaque. Structured boundaries, human-in-the-loop approvals, evaluations, step-level testing, replayed data, logs, and self-hosting give technical teams practical control over production behavior.

Where it fits
Use cases
- 01
Automate work across business systems
Move and transform data between SaaS products, internal APIs, databases, and event sources with prebuilt nodes, credentials, scheduling, branching, and retries represented in one visible workflow.
- 02
Build a controlled AI agent
Connect cloud or local models to tools and company data, inspect the agent's decisions on the canvas, enforce structured input and output, and insert human approval before consequential actions continue.
- 03
Operate automation on private infrastructure
Deploy n8n on premises when data control is required, then use workflow history, logs, version control, isolated environments, access controls, and audit features to manage production automations.
