What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw runs one self-hosted Gateway that connects chat channels, web controls, companion devices, and AI agents. A message from a phone can continue in the same session, use tools and skills, reach files or paired devices, and return the result through the originating channel while the deployment remains under the operator's control.
OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant that runs on your machine and works through chat apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Its self-hosted Gateway connects channels to an agent with tools, sessions, memory, routing, scheduled work, and companion apps.
Core capabilities
- Connects many chat channels through one self-hosted Gateway
- Routes isolated sessions across agents, workspaces, and senders
- Adds tools, skills, cron, webhooks, media, and paired device nodes
One Gateway across channels
The Gateway is the source of truth for sessions, routing, and channel connections. It serves chat plugins, WebChat, the browser control interface, companion applications, and paired mobile nodes, letting a user reach the same assistant from several devices and conversation surfaces.

Agent tools under operator control
OpenClaw is built for agents that use tools, memory, skills, cron, webhooks, and multi-agent routing rather than chat alone. Self-hosting, channel allowlists, isolated workspaces, pairing, provider configuration, and optional sandboxes give the operator explicit control over access and execution.

Where it fits
Use cases
- 01
Message a personal assistant from anywhere
Connect Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, Discord, or another supported channel to a Gateway so the same self-hosted assistant can receive work and deliver results while you are away from its machine.
- 02
Route separate agent contexts
Assign isolated sessions by agent, workspace, group, or sender so personal work, shared conversations, and specialized agents can use the same Gateway without collapsing all context into one thread.
- 03
Automate tasks on owned infrastructure
Combine scheduled jobs, webhooks, skills, browser or terminal tools, and paired mobile nodes to run recurring or event-driven work while keeping the Gateway, state, and access policy on hardware you manage.
