What is Plane?

Plane gives product and engineering teams several levels at which to organize delivery. Work items belong to projects and can roll into cycles, modules, and epics; custom views help teams focus the list, while initiatives, teamspaces, pages, and wiki content add planning and knowledge above individual tasks.

Plane brings project management, documentation, and AI-powered workflows into one workspace. It includes projects, initiatives, cycles, docs, and planning views for coordinating work, with self-hosted deployment options.

Core capabilities

  • Organize work items through projects, cycles, modules, and epics
  • Create filtered views, pages, teamspaces, initiatives, and wiki content
  • Use the AGPL Community edition on your infrastructure; evaluate commercial and air-gapped options separately

From work items to initiatives

Projects hold the working backlog, while cycles, modules, and epics group items by time, product area, or larger outcome. Custom views expose the slice a team needs, and initiatives connect delivery across projects for a broader planning and reporting perspective.

Knowledge and deployment choices

Pages, teamspaces, and wiki features keep specifications and working notes close to delivery. Plane offers hosted service and an AGPL Community edition for self-hosting. Its separately licensed Commercial and Airgapped editions provide additional governance features; those should not be assumed to be part of the open-source edition.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

    Run a product delivery cycle

Capture work items, assign ownership and status, group the work into a time-boxed cycle, and use project views to monitor what is ready, active, blocked, or complete.

  2. 02

    Coordinate a larger product initiative

Connect projects, epics, modules, and milestones under an initiative so leaders and delivery teams can share a higher-level view without losing issue-level detail.

  3. 03

Keep plans and knowledge beside the work

Use pages, teamspaces, and wiki content for briefs, decisions, and references, then link that material to the projects and work items it informs.
