What is Supabase?
Supabase starts each project with a full Postgres database and layers integrated application services around it. Generated data APIs, authentication, file storage, realtime channels, Edge Functions, a dashboard, and client libraries share one backend model that teams can use as a managed service, run locally for development, or self-host.
Supabase is an open-source Postgres development platform that brings a database, authentication, file storage, realtime APIs, auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs, and Edge Functions into one backend. Teams can use the hosted platform, develop locally, or self-host the stack.
Core capabilities
- A dedicated Postgres database with extensions, backups, generated APIs, and direct database access.
- Authentication with password, passwordless, OAuth, SSO, JWTs, and Postgres Row Level Security.
- Integrated storage, Realtime channels, and globally distributed TypeScript Edge Functions.
Postgres at the center of the backend
Every project receives a full Postgres database rather than a separate data abstraction. Supabase connects that database to generated REST and GraphQL APIs, extensions, backups, the dashboard, and direct SQL access, so teams can keep relational data and database policy at the center of the application.

Integrated services around application data
Auth stores users alongside application data and works with Row Level Security, Storage uses database-backed access policies, Realtime broadcasts database changes and channel events, and TypeScript Edge Functions handle server-side integrations. The CLI brings the stack into a reproducible local development workflow.

Use cases
- 01
Application backends
Start web, mobile, and AI products with Postgres, generated APIs, authentication, storage, and server-side functions in one platform.
- 02
Secure user and data access
Manage users with password, passwordless, OAuth, or SSO flows, then enforce authorization through JWTs and Postgres Row Level Security.
- 03
Realtime applications
Stream database changes, synchronize client state, track presence, and broadcast events to connected applications.
